Lecture Series (Digital Humanities)
November 24, 2015 @ 6:15 pm - 8:00 pm
Since digital humanities are continuously gaining popularity, Prof. Hahn organized a series of lectures covering recent topics related to digital humanities.
The third lecture is given by Gregory R. Crane (University of Leipzig) on „Digital Philology, World Literature, and the Digital Humanities“.
Abstract
So much practical work confronts us in the Digital Humanities that we can easily devote our time to the question of “how” without asking “why” we are doing something. But if ask why we exploit digital humanities, it is not enough to ask how these technologies enhance our ability to produce articles and books and to conduct traditional research more effectively. The first question must be to ask why the Humanities exist — why we have chairs and students — and then to ask how the shift to a digital world can change the relationship between scholarship and the society that supports it. This talk addresses the role of philology in particular within this context.
